The final of Create In Brighton took place on Thursday 29th March at Coalition with Ghostpoet playing live
The inaugural Create In Brighton competition Grand Final took place on Thursday 29th March at Coalition, including a live show from the amazing Ghostpoet.
It’s amazing how much an audience can invest in a voice. The phenomenon has always existed, and probably always will. Why though? Is it the sound itself, clean and simple or gruff and grizzled? The moods a voice can capture, and share with all those willing to listen is a powerful thing. Whether it was her Sound Of 2012 nomination, or just a chance to watch one of the most anticipated British songstress’ in years, a thunderous applause from a sold out crowd met Lianne La Havas as she stepped onto the stage. The musician. The voice.
Smirnoff Battle of the Clubs will see 14 of the best clubs in Great Britain go head-to-head with a rival town to host a legendary Smirnoff night. Fans can vote on Facebook to back their town, rallying their mates to get involved. The result, 7 iconic nights, in 7 top clubs across the country, voted for by fans.
Lianne La Havas sold out the Coalition in a heartbeat. That’s 500 tickets. For her first Brighton gig. And she’s yet to start the whirlwind press tour for her forthcoming debut album. It all points to her becoming one of the defining stars of 2012. This time last year, another female, ‘Sound Of…’-nominated artist played a similarly sold out gig at Coalition. Her name was Jessie J, and we all know what happened to her.
For the past few weeks, the general public have been able to vote for their favourite semi-finalist entry by 'liking' them in a gallery on the official Facebook page for the competition
The Great Escape is thrilled to be announcing an initial line-up of acts to play across its 30 venues in Brighton this May. Crossing genres from Catalan garage to Australian Electro-chant, UK Surf to Canadian Blues, a staggering host of remarkable sounds are on show already. Old or young, jaded or woefully naïve, TGE 2012 will have something to surprise you.
To celebrate the final of the Create In Brighton competition, Ghostpoet will be playing a FREE live show at Coalition on 29.03.12
You’d probably be forgiven for expecting Toro Y Moi, playing Coalition as part of the South coast’s ‘Viva La France’, to be another French producer set to carry the electro torch. As a native of South Carolina USA though, with no ascertainable French connection, that’s probably not the case. Aside from questioning the metrics used for choosing Viva La France’s acts, Toro Y Moi’s South Carolinian roots do help explain his part in the much touted ‘chillwave’ movement of Summer 2010 that has helped, and hindered, his career thus far. The reason being that Toro Y Moi and fellow ‘chillwave’ act Washed Out both attended South Carolina University. Is South Carolina deserving of being home of chillwave? Probably not, but it is an interesting coincidence.

For a band that don’t like to say too much, or probably because of that, there was an enormous amount of hype surrounding WU LYF and their debut album ‘Go Tell Fire To The Mountain’. Such is their unique ‘heavy pop’ and musings of a ‘World United’ that they had developed a cult following, one happy to shell out as much as £50 for demo CDs before they were even signed. Said cult following, buzz followers, as well as those just curious to see what all the fuss was about, filled out Coalition for a night of ambience, disaffection and excitement.
Is the first thing we mention about Scroobius Pip still his Top 40 poetry-hop hit ‘Thou Shall Always Kill’? Yeah, we guess it is but, despite how brilliant that song was, it's changing. The bearded rapper’s new album ‘Distraction Pieces’ is starting to eclipse the hit that put him on the festival circuit.
The life of an electronic producer come DJ come remixer can often be a confusing one. Reviewers and fans alike constantly attempt to pigeon hole them, but with their interests and talents stretching throughout the musical spectrum, this can be a difficult task. It’s this exact same variance in their roles in the music industry that has led to much disappointment from fans of their DJ and live performances.
You just can’t live like Steve-O did through the last decade – not for long anyway. Arrested for stapling his balls to his leg, urinating on crisps and possession of drugs – his self-destructive streak spread way beyond his criminal record and his professional pain for Jackass and Wildboyz. A drug problem persuaded Johnny Knoxville and friends to have him sectioned, something that seems to have set him on the right road – albeit one that has left him a tea-total vegan. Yes, really.
Southern Comfort has got an exciting, new shot guaranteed to get you a little hot under the collar and we’re offering you a free one at Drink In Brighton venues!
It’s no exaggeration to call The Rapture’s ‘House Of Jealous Lovers’ the most important single by a guitar band in the last decade. Following just a few months after LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Losing My Edge (both were produced and released by DFA), it changed the idea that you could actually dance to indie. From there on in cowbells, squealed vocals and post-punk guitar chops were no strangers to a dance beat, whether played by a drummer or a drum machine. It brought on the indie-dance sound that dominated New York, London and Brighton.
If you’re looking for pioneers then you’ve come to the right place. Silver Apples pretty much invented the electronic music that dominates today – that minimal, pounding beat that soundtracks nearly every night. So how come, unless you’re a proper music geek, you haven’t heard of them? Well, they only existed for a couple of albums right back in the late 60s. Also they weren’t the easiest thing to get your head around, then or now. Part psychedelia, part percussive electronica, their classic 60s albums still sound intense now.
Halloween wasn’t always such a big deal. Oh, sure, Americans have always gone mad for dressing up but us Brits used to think it was just for kids. That’s completely changed, and we can only assume that everyone realised that it was another excuse for a massive party. And that’s exactly what Halloween has become – the second biggest night out after New Year’s Eve.
There’s no getting away from the fact that Wu Lyf are one of the most divisive bands of the year.
