Create In Brighton Awards @ Coalition with Ghostpoet

The inaugural Create In Brighton competition took place on Thursday 29th March at Coalition in Brighton and was a fantastic success. The winners were announced by our panel of judges including Lawrence Zeegen (Dean of Design at London College of Communication), Kevin Meredith (aka Lomokev) and Sarah Arnett. The finalists’ art was displayed, Ghostpoet played live and everyone who came had a thoroughly good time!

In December 2011, Create In Brighton launched, in association with Tiger Beer. The competition called for graphic designers, illustrators and photographers to enter for a chance to win a huge cash prize of £1000. Entrants had to be living, studying or working in Brighton & Hove, and their entry had to follow a theme of ‘discover’ in keeping with the Tiger Beer campaigns entitled KNOW THE NOT KNOWN. http://www.knowthenotknown.com/fb/

We received hundreds of entries, and the first round of voting was handled by our expert panel of judges, Lawrence Zeegen, Sarah Arnett and Kevin Meredith (aka Lomokev). The 30 entries chosen to go through were then uploaded to a gallery on the Create In Brighton Facebook page www.facebook.com/createinbrighton where the public were able to vote by ‘liking’ an entry. Those 30 entries were also supplied framed and mounted, and exhibited around several designated pubs and bars in Brighton, also giving people a chance to vote if they came across them.

The ten finalists were selected as a result of receiving the most ‘likes’ on Facebook, who would then go on to be scrutinised by the judges once more in order to reveal our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. As well as the £1000 for the 1st prize winner, 2nd prize received £500 and 3rd prize a large amount of Tiger Beer!

The Grand Final was held at Coalition on Brighton’s seafront, where following the announcements, Ghostpoet played a FREE, live show to all who attended. The public had been able to get hold of free tickets for the entire evening for several weeks in advance. Needless to say, the night was a huge success and everyone who came along not only got to see the winners being announced but also the final ten entries, which were on display, as well as a short video of the finalists and the judges.

1st Prize went to Matt C Stokes for a wonderful piece of illustration
2nd Prize went to Alex Bamford for his moonlight photography
3rd Prize went to Jack Sheen for a great photograph of a live gig in Brighton

Create In Brighton has received extremely positive feedback and we therefore hope to be back in the not too distant future with a second instalment. So watch this space.

A big thank you goes out to our judges, the entrants and all those who voted as well as our sponsors and partners: Tiger Beer, Drink In Brighton, Source Magazine and Urban Outfitters.
