Sébastien Tellier is a modern day enigma. A hirsute lothario, conquering hearts with soulful music that brims with a seductive élan. And he’s coming to play at Coalition.
Famous for tracks like La Ritournelle and Divine, not to mention his notorious appearance on Eurovision, our controversial French favourite Sébastien is sure to bring the French to the party.
When not composing in his apartment, the Parisian has been shacking up with artists of international repute. Previous bedfellows include Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk), Quentin Dupieux (Mr Oizo), Philippe Zdar, SebastiAn, Tony Allen.
Who knows where he will end up next? Ever since he marched into the offices of Record Makers and announced himself with the melancholy Fantino, a slice of forlorn pop that also graced the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, Sébastien has been on a journey, characterized by reinvention and a desire to expose the truth.
The writing process for each studio album begins in the same way. Changing his perspective on the world, Sebastien sets a new theme as the pivot around which his musical universe swirls. Reflections on childhood and family underscored his debut, the follow up played out to a skewed backdrop where politics reigns supreme. The emotive piano-led La Ritournelle emerged at this time, becoming the moment where Sébastien truly announced himself to the world.
Since then his profile has risen dramatically, resulting in a character far more assured and attuned to his audience. A new love became the muse for his third record, Sexuality, a realization of perfect sex. The lead single, Divine, was selected to represent France at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, a task which Sébastien fulfilled with typical aplomb. A ground-breaking collaboration was also announced with American Apparel as Sexuality became the first record to be distributed in their stores around the globe, the sultry overtones of the album fitting perfectly with the ever-provocative stylings of the clothier. Embarking on a Sexuality world tour, Sébastien captivated audiences across the globe with shows at Coachella, Paris’ Olympia and Shepherds Bush Empire in London. Always striving to present his oeuvre in a fresh and exciting manner, every show reflects the refreshingly individual nature of the man.
Late this April (2012) Sébastien returns, however his return is more a descent from Mount Sinia than a breathless reemergence from the back-room, as his presence has ascended to a plane removed from corporeal pleasure. With "My God is Blue" Sébastien seeks to unify his 'followers' (fans) under the blanket of his message; love. With the production aid of none other than Ed Banger's Mr Flash, Sébastien guides his listener through an expansive sonic space, defined by classic Tellier synth textures alongside a newly realized stadium ready grandeur. Following suit with his transcendence to sacrosancticity, a strong choral overtone presides over his expected funk hooks. Think midnight mass at the discotheque, a new breed of holy. Driven by this nouveau-prophet-leading-cult concept, the album's pre-release will center around the formation of a community, unified by the common goal of unraveling the Thelema-esque rebus his album presents. Personal addresses made by Sébastien to this audience through a series of videos will work in tandem with a specialized website meant to serve as a hub for his followers. A major pillar of Sébastien's message is the notion of finding ones true identity through the supplantation of former ego with one of the individual's creation. Thus when registering on the site followers will be given a new name and a ranking within the 'organization'. Members will be able to elevate their status' through challenges centered around the philosophy of working towards this end of self-discovery, a path intended to culminate with "communal energy in an immense blue wave that will wash over the world" after which, Sébastien ensures us, "the truth will emerge".
