The name may well ring a bell. That’s most probably due to Missing Andy’s success on Sky 1’s “Must Be The Music” last year. Or it could simply be because you’ve been listening out for the rare Top 40 hit that isn’t simply a big name performing atop a shallow dance beat, but is instead music made and crafted, attempting to convey some sort of message. In the band’s own words “No one is speaking up for our generation.”
For years Los Angeles has been much too interested in making films to produce much of an impression of the music industry. Apart from the Laurel Canyon folk scene of the 60s and the hair metal nonsense of the 80s, LA hasn’t really made an imprint into the culture, especially in electronic dance music. But that’s all changing. Mary Anne Hobbs, who knows about this sort of thing, called LA the home of "the most exciting electronic music on the planet" and the reason for that is Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder collective, of which Tokimonsta is a key member.
He’s been talking about this for years, but we guess he’s been a bit busy winning the UK DMC Championship, twice. However there’s much more to JFB than just being the country’s best scratch DJ, he’s a chart topping producer and a boundless innovator. His first success was with the Battlejam night he ran with beatboxer Beardyman. Taking live hip hop in a completely new direction, the pair used bleeding-edge technology and bucket loads of ideas to make beats on the fly, either sampling Beardy’s vocal noises or the crowd’s exclamations into JFB’s decks. The hip hop world still hasn’t caught up.
Two Wounded Birds are truly the British equivalent to the USA’s Brooklyn based vintage surf pop dreamers, The Drums. They share a similar love for 50/60s throwbacks, conventional pop structure and cliched song titles (Together Forever), but yet still hold onto that familiar British sense of melancholy.
Dog Is Dead, the Nottingham five-piece that you may or may not have been introduced to via their appearance in the finale of E4’s favourite ‘sex drugs and teenage angst’ drama Skins. Equally you may well have heard them via the rave reviews they’ve received from BBC radio’s indie connoisseurs Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and Tom Robinson. Now signed to Atlantic Records, the humbled quintet have got some real momentum behind them.
On an incredibly rainy night in Brighton, it was with quite a surprise that the queue for Josh Pyke and Passenger’s show was extending out of the venue and down the road. After the pleasure of witnessing the gig though, the loyalty and size of their fan base was not quite as surprising.
Southern Comfort has got an exciting, new shot guaranteed to get you a little hot under the collar and we’re offering you a free one at Drink In Brighton venues!
Anyone who consumed music through the end of the 80s and start of the 90s is probably astounded by quite how influential the dreamy indie of 4AD and Creation has become. Sure, the NME and those other lost music mags raved about it, but back then “proper music” was very much a minority interest. Now bands like Cults (at the poppy end) and Washed Out (at the woozy end) are dominating the ears of those who carry tote bags of obscure record labels as they shop in Rounder and Resident.
Saturday 24th of September saw an evening of threes at the newly refurbished and much improved Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar. Three bands, three three-pieces with headliners Young Legionnaire embarking on the first leg of their first headline tour, albeit with a wealth of experience as individuals.

Saturday came as soon as Friday went, I’d like to say that I had plenty of sleep in-between, but alas a programme of DJs through ‘til the early hours at Coalition had put pay to that. However, an afternoon of diverse (and hopefully good) music at Life on the seafront was all I needed to sort me out. That, and a bit of sun, of course.
Rather than having the usual chaos of trying to get around all of Brighton’s venues during the blind panic that is trying to find the cream of the crop at the Great Escape Festival, I chose three of Brighton’s best venues that were involved, which also happened to handily be within 2 minutes of each other and tried to see as much as is humanly possible over two days.
The Great Escape, Europe’s leading event for showcasing new musical talent announces the first artists for the 2011 festival. Taking place in Brighton over 3 days in May, The Great Escape kick starts the festival season, introducing 15,000 music lovers to the key artists and sounds of the year.
Brugal Rum bring you a refreshing alternative to every day busking in Brighton & Hove. This fantastic new venture has seen many musicians sign up to play impromptu sets at 15 venues across the city who are a part of the ‘Busk Stop’ initiative.
Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men's health. As a key local supporter of the cause, Drink in Brighton is looking for your help in making this year’s campaign bigger and better than ever.
On November 27th, 14 countries will participate in exchanging their nightlife, cultures and a night never experienced before. Share your ideas on what the UK should send by popping down to the Smirnoff Crate, situated on East Street from 7pm on October 16th.
In these troubled financial times, one of the few success stories we've seen in the drinks trade has been real ale. No longer the sole preserve of tankard weilding, beard wearing 'enthusiasts', real ale now finds iteslf at the forefront of a national trend toward supporting small businesses, buying local produce and consuming organic ingredients.
Brugal Rum bring you a refreshing alternative to every day busking in Brighton & Hove. This fantastic new venture has seen many musicians sign up to play impromptu sets at 15 venues across the city who are a part of the ‘Busk Stop’ initiative.
Musicians can register for free with Busk Stop by supplying details of their act and Myspace account and/or web site for consideration. Members will then be able to busk in the designated Busk Stop pubs at any time of day. Just as with normal busking, any money collected by the musicians performing will be theirs to keep, with no limit on the amount of performances per day.
The aim of the project is not only to support upcoming musical talent but also to provide customers with a more varied and exciting visit to their local public house; which will also include some tantalising Brugal cocktails and drinks offers throughout the Busk Stop network. Every busker will be entitled to a free Brugal and Coke when they play, whilst customers will be able to buy them for just £2 during a performance.
All of the participating venues have been chosen specifically because live performances will compliment the atmosphere of each of them, while all Busk Stop musicians will be carefully selected by experienced local music promoter and ex-Freebutt operator Andy Rossiter.
Andy’s years of booking experience at The Freebutt have been to put to good use with the Busk Stop scheme. “I’m really excited to see this project develop and see Brighton’s pub and music scene become even more interesting than it already is, with musicians being free to play to an audience whenever they feel the urge and customers of the pubs experiencing some of Brighton’s talent in an informal atmosphere.”
