“A killer local but a great pre-club bar too, especially if you’re going out in Kemptown or down to the Concorde. Still trying to pluck up the courage to steal the suit of armour.”
“The menu here is way above normal pub grub, but there’s nothing poncey about it either. The roasts are great, and it’s a marvellous way to spend a Sunday afternoon – they usually have live music too.”

Having undergone a serious going-over since its days as Polar East, The Thomas Kemp now boasts a rather different character, with old maps on the wall and even a full suit of armour in the corner. There's a sun-trap beer garden to the rear, while windows at front and back are thrown wide open duirng summer; in winter, you're best off staying inside and making yourself acquainted with the cake. Not just in the winter, for that matter. Cake is good all year round. For that small minority whose gastronomic interests extend beyond sweet treats, they also serve food daily until 9pm - trad pub grub augmented with jerk chicken, lentil and coconut curry, and a range of weekly specials. The Sunday roast is a corker too, featuring three veggie mains as well as carnivorous options, often accompanied by bands. They also offer a regular open mic and DJs at the weekend. While they don't have a designated section for private hire, it is possible to book out tables or sections of the pub in advance. Just ask.
